I’ve been heading up to Big Bear to relax in the summer sun and enjoy the winter snow for decades, and as a chef always looking for great food and delicious meals, I’ve learned quite a bit about the local food scene over the years.

You may be surprised, but Big Bear Lake isn’t just known for its slopes, hiking trails, and water sports. The culinary scene is surprisingly diverse and hearty. And after a long day of outdoor adventure, nothing beats finding the perfect spot to refuel.

Whether you’re craving a classic steakhouse dinner, an authentic German wurst of the best kind, or a tropical escape in the middle of the mountains, this town has it all. I’ve rounded up the top spots to satisfy your appetite, no matter what you’re looking for. Here is your ultimate guide to the best Big Bear restaurants.

1. Captain’s Anchorage

Type of Food: Steakhouse & Seafood

Overview

Stepping into Captain’s Anchorage feels like traveling back in time. And that’s not surprising since this historic landmark has been serving Big Bear since 1947. The vibe is rustic and cozy, with a nautical theme that pays homage to its name.

People love this spot for the old-school steakhouse atmosphere, complete with dark wood interiors and a ghost story or two (ask the staff about George, the resident ghost). It is the perfect place for a celebratory dinner or a romantic evening out.

My husband Mike and I definitely consider the Anchorage one of our favorite restaurants in Big Bear. We love the relaxed atmosphere, reliable craft cocktails, and friendly service. There’s a great mix of locals and visitors, and we’ve never ordered anything off the menu that we didn’t truly enjoy.

In addition to the ample indoor seating options, there’s also a great patio with fire pits that makes an excellent choice for al fresco dining in the warmer months.

Standout Dishes

You cannot go wrong with the prime rib, which is skillfully slow roasted and often cited as the best on the mountain. But there are plenty of other mouth-watering steak options to choose from too. If you prefer seafood, the Australian lobster tail is a local favorite.

2. Old German Deli

Type of Food: German

Lots of wunderbar offerings at Old German Deli

Overview

For a taste of Bavaria in the San Bernardino Mountains, the Old German Deli is the hidden gem that fills the bill. Not your standard sandwich shop, this small, unassuming spot offers an authentic experience that transports your taste buds to the German Alps.

This is one of those Big Bear places to eat where the vibe is comfortably casual and oh so friendly. It’s a deli and shop combo that provides everything you need to handle your hunger without all the bells and whistles of a full-service, sit-down restaurant.

Visitors love it for the genuine hospitality and the extensive selection of authentic German favorites. There are plenty of sausage options and Old-Country-style cold-cut sandwiches to choose from. There’s lots of seating too, indoors and out; you just have to order at the counter.

In addition, the shop shelves are stocked with imported German chocolates, beers, and condiments. This is an excellent stop for a quick, hearty lunch that definitely rises above the everyday. It’s also a great choice for unusual culinary souvenirs to bring back home.

Standout Dishes

The Bratwurst sandwich is the star here, served on a fresh roll with plenty of sauerkraut and spicy mustard. The homemade potato salad is creamy and flavorful, making it the perfect side. For a sweet finish, grab a slice of the apple strudel.

Old German Deli: 40645 Village Dr, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

3. Teddy Bear Restaurant

Type of Food: American Diner

Teddy Bear Restaurant pies are legendary!

Overview

Established in 1944, the Teddy Bear Restaurant has earned its rank as a Big Bear institution that’s long been a staple for locals and tourists alike. It offers that quintessential small-town diner experience in which the portions are generous and the coffee keeps coming.

Located in the heart of Big Bear Village, Teddy Bear’s atmosphere is warm and family-friendly, making it a great spot for breakfast before hitting the slopes, lunch later in the day, or a filling, satisfying evening meal.

Just about everything is lovingly made from scratch, and customers love the consistent quality and the comforting, home-cooked style of the food.

Standout Dishes

Their homemade pies are legendary, specifically the apple pie, which often sells out. Our last time in town, we were too full after lunch and bought 3 slices of 3 different pies to take back to our hotel. When evening rolled around, we were still so full, we simply had a little pie party for dinner. What a delicious decision!

Breakfast is available all day, and the bear-sized pancakes and pastrami hash are must-tries. At lunch or dinner, the chicken pot pie is the definition of comfort food.

Just a heads-up that payment here is old, old school: cash only—but there is an ATM on the premises.

4. Tropicali

Type of Food: Hawaiian Poke & Sushi

Pulled pork and a view of Big Bear Lake at Tropicali

One of the best Big Bear restaurants with a view, Tropicali also provides plenty of island vibes.

Overview

Tropicali brings a splash of the islands to the middle of the mountains. This is one of the highest-rated Big Bear Lake restaurants, and for good reason. The atmosphere is incredibly energetic and welcoming, often described by visitors as the friendliest service they’ve ever experienced.

The decor is bright, colorful, and surf-inspired. It’s a great place for anyone in the mood for a refreshing break from the more typical cabin-style dining found elsewhere in town.

Even ordering is a break from the ordinary. You make your selections from one of the menu screens after you enter the lobby. Detailed descriptions and photos of the menu items give you all the info you need to make your choices.

The full bar with plenty of tasty cocktails and coffee options mean you might be meeting your new favorite drinks here too.

Standout Dishes

The poke bowls are the main attraction, allowing you to customize your meal with fresh tuna, salmon, and a variety of toppings. The Volcano Bowl packs a spicy punch that Tases the tastebuds of townies and out-of-towners alike.

But you’ll also find plenty of chicken, beef, and chicken choices too. And since you customize your own meal, you’ll be able to come up with plenty of vegan options as well. Pair your meal with a Dole Whip for the full island experience.

This was our first stop when we drove up to the mountain last summer, and it was just the ticket. We sat out on the mister-cooled deck with a great view of the lake while diving into our island fare and perfectly chill coffee drinks. Aloha, Big Bear.

Tropicali: 40771 Big Bear Blvd, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

5. Fire Rock Burgers & Brews

Type of Food: Gourmet Burgers & Craft Beer

Burgers and beer at Firerock

Creative burgers rock at Fire Rock!

Overview

If you are looking for a rock-and-roll vibe with high-quality bar food, Fire Rock Burgers & Brews is the place. The interior features lots of guitar decor and classic rock memorabilia, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere.

It is a favorite for groups who want to enjoy a cold craft beer and a massive burger after a day of hiking, biking, boarding, or skiing. The energy is lively, and the playlist is always on point.

Standout Dishes

You’re not going to be shocked that burgers are the main attraction here—but you might be surprised how monstrously large and devilishly delicious they are!

The meat is a custom blend of short rib, brisket, and Angus chuck, and there are twelve creative creations to choose from.

Last time in, Mike and I shared the Cabo Wabo with fiery Mexican flash, and the Eye of the Tiger, which featured a grilled Philly cheesesteak with the works atop the burger patty.

Both of these were great burgers, and quite the workout too! Choices like these are what makes this one of our favorite places among Big Bear Village restaurants for a cheat-day extravaganza.

Another hit here is the Avocado Bomb—a deep-fried avocado stuffed with spicy tuna—that is a unique and popular appetizer.

Fire Rock Burgers & Brews: 618 B Pine Knot Ave, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

6. Hacienda Grill

Standout Mexican food and tasty margaritas at Hacienda Grill

Type of Food: Mexican

Overview

Although there are a number of Mexican restaurants in Big Bear Lake, CA, Hacienda Grill is our favorite. It offers a family-friendly environment with classic Mexican fare. This spacious Mexican restaurant accommodates large groups easily.

The feel is both festive and relaxed, perfect for a casual dinner. Diners appreciate the fast service and the complimentary chips and salsa that hit the table as soon as you sit down.

Standout Dishes

The sizzling fajitas are a crowd-pleaser, arriving at the table hot and aromatic. The carnitas are also highly rated, tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. I can also vouch for the tostada, and the tacos have never disappointed.

You may already be way ahead of me, but don't leave without trying one of their signature margaritas.

Hacienda Grill: 41787 Big Bear Blvd, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

7. Peppercorn Grille

Type of Food: Italian Meets Californian Cuisine

Peppercorn Grill

You’ll find nice digs and fine dining at Big Bear Lake’s Peppercorn Grille.

Overview

Located right on Pine Knot Avenue, Peppercorn Grille is perfect for those who want a dining experience with a view. The heated patio is a favorite spot for people watching while enjoying a meal. Inside, there is plenty of booth seating that provides a cozy, private, fine dining experience.

Considered one of Big Bear’s best restaurants for more than 20 years, the Grille strikes a nice balance between a casual lunch spot and an elegant dinner venue.

Standout Dishes

The Lobster Ravioli is rich and decadent, a top choice for pasta lovers. If you are in the mood for pizza, their gourmet thin-crust pizzas are excellent. The Clam Chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl is also a warm, satisfying antidote to a cold day.

Peppercorn Grille: 553 Pine Knot Ave, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

8. Himalayan Restaurant

Type of Food: Nepalese, Tibetan, & Northern Indian

Sharing a meal at Himalayan Restaurant

A taste of the Himalayas in the mountains of Big Bear

Overview

For something quite different from standard local mountain fare, this restaurant offers the exotic flavors, intoxicating spices, and good vibes reminiscent of a mountain range far, far away—the Himalayas.

The interior is decorated with custom artwork and warm colors, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The kitchen earns plaudits for its authentic flavors, and the wide variety of meatless options make this eatery a haven for vegetarians and vegans visiting Big Bear.

Standout Dishes

The chicken tikka masala is creamy and flavorful, serving as a great introduction for those new to the cuisine. The lamb vindaloo offers a delicious spicy kick for those who can handle the heat. The garlic naan is fresh from the oven and essential for soaking up the delicious sauces of whatever you end up ordering.

Himalayan Restaurant: 672 Pine Knot Ave, Ste. 2, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

9. Grizzly Manor Cafe

Type of Food: American Breakfast

Big breakfasts at Grizzly Manor Cafe provide plenty of fuel for your Big Bear adventures.

Overview

You can’t have a serious discussion about the best restaurants in Big Bear without mentioning Grizzly Manor Cafe. Famous for its long lines and huge portions, this is definitely one of the best places for breakfast in town.

It is a tiny, quirky, hole-in-the-wall with stickers covering almost every surface. The vibe is loud, fun, and unapologetically calorific. People love it because it feels like a local secret—that everyone knows about.

Standout Dishes

The menu is extensive, with popular 3-egg omelettes and make-your-own options too. Among the waffles, pancakes, and French toast offerings, the Polar Bear pancakes are massive, fluffy, and legendary. If you’re hankering for a taste of the South, the biscuits and gravy are thick, peppery, and satisfying.

Even if you come extremely hungry, you’ll be sure to leave completely full and happy. Share and compare for a heads-up on what you might order the next time you come in.

Grizzly Manor Cafe: 41268 Big Bear Blvd, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

Type of Food: Pizza & Italian

Saucy Mama’s is a Big Bear Village favorite for pizza!

Overview

Known for its lively energy and creative pizzas, Saucy Mama’s Pizzeria is a local hangout right in the middle of Big Bear Lake Village that brings everyone together.

The walls are covered in license plates and quirky décor, giving the space a youthful, unbuttoned vibe. It's popular with families and large groups and is often buzzing in the evenings.

Standout Dishes

Try the Mountain Mama pizza loaded with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, olives, and bell peppers, or indulge in the addictive garlic knots. The made-to-order calzones are also a big hit.

Saucy Mama’s Pizzeria: 618 Pine Knot Ave, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

This is the go-to spot for craft beer enthusiasts and those who want an upbeat, social atmosphere. With a modern, mountain-lodge feel, it's perfect for sampling locally brewed beers along with hearty, creative cuisine. The brewpub has both indoor and outdoor seating and often showcases live music.

Standout Dishes

The brewpub pretzel with beer cheese is a must-try starter. For mains, the elk burger offers a unique twist. It goes without saying that you should try some of the house-brewed selections, which rotate with the seasons.

Big Bear Lake Brewing Company: 40827 Stone Rd, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

12. Maggio’s Pizza

Pizza at Maggio's

You’ll find old-school Italian favorites and inventive pizzas at Maggio’s.

Type of Food: Italian & Pizza

Overview

Maggio’s is beloved for its classic Italian comfort food, vintage red-check tablecloths, and cozy neighborhood feel. It’s been serving Big Bear since 1972 and is a favorite for those looking for authentic pizza and pasta in a traditional, welcoming setting.

Standout Dishes

The lasagna here is loaded with cheese and homemade sauce. In addition to several traditional pizzas that you’re sure to be familiar with, there are also some outside-the-pizza-box options to consider. These include a Philly Steak w/ Alfredo sauce, a South of the Border pie with some jalapeño pizzazz, and even pizzas with shrimp or clam.

No matter what you end up ordering, you’re definitely going to want some of the famous garlic breads to be a part of your meal.

Maggio’s Pizza: 42160 Big Bear Blvd, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315

The avocado toast here is a brunch standout, while the lunch and dinner menu leans heavily to creative craft burgers, sandwiches, and wraps. Seafood options include mussels, ahi tuna, and fish and chips. The extensive cocktail menu is also a local draw.
