How do I know? I know because I live just a bit south of Carlsbad along the same Southern California Coast in the sunny San Diego enclave of La Jolla. Here, I’m not only surrounded by amazing restaurants serving up great food from early morning to late at night, but I’m also blessed with great options for San Diego staycations all along the coast.

In addition to their beauty and the wealth of attractions and activities they offer, these jewels of San Diego County are also flush with some of the best places for delicious food in Southern California. And one of my favorite spots among these wonderful choices is Carlsbad, CA.

I’ve already written about what a great job Carlsbad restaurants do at tantalizing taste buds and protecting pocket books with the best Carlsbad happy hours, but the town is also blessed with a bevy of breakfast spots that help you greet the day in the most amazing way! So now, I’m going to fill you in on the best breakfast restaurants in Carlsbad.

And just to be clear, I literally mean the best breakfast places in Carlsbad, CA! I won’t be covering the spots that do breakfast in Oceanside, just north of Carlsbad, nor the purveyors of breakfast Encinitas style in the town just south of Carlsbad. Carlsbad has such a wide variety of breakfast options done the right way, there’s absolutely no reason to stray.

The Best Breakfast Places in Carlsbad, CA

Whether in the downtown hub of Carlsbad Village or among the best food finds farther inland, the best breakfast Carlsbad has to offer is waiting for you! Between my frequent stays in Carlsbad and my special trips to taste my way through the town’s entire breakfast scene, I’ve taken the guesswork out of your decision. Here are the best spots for breakfast in Carlsbad!

1. Beach Plum Kitchen

Beach Plum Kitchen, a great place for breakfast in Carlsbad

In the eyes of many, the best breakfast Carlsbad, CA, has on offer can be found at Beach Plum Kitchen. Located inland in the Plaza Paseo Real, this restaurant was started up by two long-time residents of Carlsbad who were East Coast transplants.

They believed Carlsbad needed an affordably priced, chef-quality eatery that could provide a delicious breakfast and great service while responsibly sourcing local ingredients from local farms. They have succeeded in creating such a place!

Among the fresh ingredients on offer here are cage-free eggs and organic fair-trade coffee. In addition to tasty versions of the breakfast burrito, avocado toast, and eggs Benedict nearly obligatory on everybody’s breakfast menus these days (they actually do 3 different styles of Benedict), Beach Plum has a nice variety of pancakes, French toasts, and waffles and a dizzying selection of create-your-own omelette choices.

There are also plenty of California specialties and Mexican-style breakfast options, and the restaurant is well known for its collection of delicious homemade jams.

The interior is bright and creatively decorated, the ambience welcoming, and the clientele is diverse. This is an excellent choice for breakfast.

Address: 6971 El Camino Real, Ste. 201, Carlsbad, CA 92009

Hours: Open Daily, 7:30 am–2:00 pm

2. the Naked Cafe

The Naked Cafe, known for their healthy breakfast options

The Naked Cafe, known for their healthy breakfast options

The first Naked Cafe opened in Solana Beach in 2002, and in addition to the Carlsbad and Encinitas locations in North County, there is a Point Loma outpost as well. Carlsbad’s Naked Cafe is situated in the heart of the Village in the Village Faire Shopping Center.

For more than 20 years, Naked Cafe has been satisfying customers by providing a delicious, healthy breakfast with fresh, organic, wholesome ingredients creatively combined. The breakfast menu offers up an impressive variety of satisfying Latin-, Asian-, and American-influenced creations. You’ll find plenty of both meaty and vegetarian options among the scrambles, burritos, quesadillas, and hash dishes, many of which offer protein-packed black beans as a delicious side.

Egg whites are featured in many of the breakfast options, but those with a sweet tooth will be amply stoked by the famous pancakes. The combination of healthy ingredients, inventive dishes, and dependable deliciousness continues to keep customers coming back to Naked Cafe.

Address: 300 Carlsbad Village Dr., Ste. 107A, Carlsbad, CA 92008

3. Cafe Topes

Crack n’ Eggs, a classic Carlsbad breakfast at Cafe Topes

Crack n’ Eggs, a classic Carlsbad breakfast at Cafe Topes

There’s plenty of incredibly good food on offer at Cafe Topes, located ever-so-slightly outside of Carlsbad Village. A number of the most addictive options feature Cardiff Crack. For the uninitiated, that’s the uniquely Burgundy-pepper-marinated Tri-Tip from Cardiff Seaside Market.

The locally-legendary meat is responsible for the names and distinctly delicious flavors of the Crack’n Eggs, Crack’n Benedict, and Crack Breakfast Burrito offerings on the menu.

The Crack Breakfast Burrito may just be the best breakfast burrito Carlsbad has to offer, with eggs, melted cheese, and house-roasted potatoes keeping the tri-tip company. The Country Burrito, which ditches salsa for country gravy, is surely one of the most inventive Carlsbad breakfast burritos.

All three of the restaurant’s benedicts feature a delicious Hollandaise Sauce, and Prager Brothers’ bread is used for the toasts. One of them is a delicious break from the ordinary that features the incredibly popular Italian cheese Burrata, pesto, heirloom tomatoes, and a balsamic drizzle.

At Cafe Topes, you order at the counter and then your food is delivered to your table, whether inside or at the nicely shaded outdoor seating areas. Whether you see it at the counter or read it on the menu, I would highly recommend surrendering to the temptation to order Mom’s Famous Ciny Roll.

With this incredibly sinful cinnamon roll, decadently delicious French breakfast pastries and ludicrously luscious Italian breakfast pastries now have a worthy Carlsbad competitor.

Address: 3091 Roosevelt St., Carlsbad, CA 92008

Hours: Tuesday–Sunday: 7:00 am–2:00 pm

4. village Kitchen & Pie Shoppe

Village Kitchen & Pie Shoppe, one of the best Carlsbad breakfast places for hearty portions

Village Kitchen & Pie Shoppe, one of the best Carlsbad breakfast places for hearty portions

Village Kitchen is one of a number of Carlsbad breakfast places that are delightfully old-school. In my book, any place that offers the following breakfast classics is authentically old school: Pork Chop & Eggs; Biscuits & Gravy; and Kielbasa. Village Kitchen checks all these boxes.

In fact, they have 5 different biscuits and gravy options, and they even offer fried chicken livers as a breakfast entrée or side. That’s not just old school, that’s vintage! I also like that you can order breakfast, lunch, or dinner all day long. That means that you can even get the Village Club triple decker sandwich on the lunch menu at breakfast. The club sandwich is an American classic any time of day!

I also love the kitchen-sink omelettes here. The Carlsbad, for instance, comes with bacon, ham, sausage, green onions, green bell pepper, mushrooms, tomatoes, potato, cheddar cheese, and swiss cheese. That’s serious!

The menu is extensive, and, as you may have already guessed, the portions are generous. I also love that in addition to the regular toast options, you can choose a muffin, cinnamon roll, biscuit, or banana nut bread as a breakfast side. Everyone in your whole family is going to find something to get excited about here!

All these options for baked-good breakfast sides are no doubt related to the fact that this is, after all, a pie shop in addition to a restaurant.

Try to save some room after your meal for a slice of one of the nearly 30 types of fresh fruit, cream, or specialty pies made from scratch each day. If you’re too full, simply take a slice or whole pie to go. It’ll be worth it.

Address: 950 Tamarack Ave., Carlsbad, CA 92008

Hours: Tuesday–Sunday: 8:00 am–8:00 pm; Monday: 8:00 am–2:00 pm

5. tip Top Meats

Tip Top Meats, one of the most affordable Carlsbad breakfast restaurants

Tip Top Meats, one of the most affordable Carlsbad breakfast restaurants

Tip Top Meats is one of the legendary Carlsbad breakfast restaurants, and my husband Mike and I can’t get enough of it. It’s quintessentially old-school—with an Old World twist. In addition to serving up delicious classic American comfort food at incredibly affordable prices, Tip Top is also a European market offering tons of German and East European specialties for sale.

This is the perfect place to get old-fashioned breakfasts with huge portions at a tiny cost. The most famous of their breakfast specials is the Big John Breakfast: 3 eggs, home fries, toast, and ALL the pork link breakfast sausage, bratwurst, Polish Sausage, or ham you can eat for $8.99! The most expensive items on the menu are only $12.98, and those are the steak and eggs and pork chop and eggs combos.

First opened in 1967, Tip Top is still going strong, somehow maintaining top-quality food at hard-to-believe prices. Located just off the Palomar Airport Road exit from the 5 Freeway, Tip Top is definitely the best breakfast near Legoland California and the finest choice for breakfast near the Carlsbad Premium Outlets.

The only caveat about eating here is that breakfast service ends at noon. However, the supersized sandwiches make it one of the best lunch options in the area too!

Address: 6118 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92011

Hours: Open Daily, 7:00 am–12:00 pm

6. Shorehouse Kitchen

Shorehouse Kitchen, the place in Carlsbad for innovative breakfasts

Short Rib & Eggs at Shorehouse Kitchen, a top place in Carlsbad for innovative breakfasts

This Carlsbad breakfast restaurant couldn’t be more different from Tip Top, yet Carlsbad and I love them both. That’s just proof that the best breakfast in Carlsbad, CA, can vary from day to day.

Where you are, what you’re in the mood for, what time it is—these all play a role in deciding where to have one of the best meals of your day. All the places on this list are great in their own way!

Here, I love the sophisticated choices and inventive riffs that change the everyday into a special day. For instance, the Pork Carnitas & Poblano Cornbread and the Roasted Veggie & Pistachio are just 2 of the creative Benedicts available. The Brioche Breakfast Grilled Cheese and Maple Fried Chicken Breast are 2 outside-the-box, out-of-this-world breakfast sandwich choices!

And this is definitely one the Carlsbad breakfast restaurants that can teach conventional brunch restaurants a thing or two. The Cutwater Bloody Mary and Margarita Fresca are just two of the many cocktails that can transform the ordinary into the celebratory. A long list of boozy coffee drinks, bellinis, mimosas, sparklings, whites, reds, and beers are also able to enable a party at your table!

Address: 2833 State Street, Carlsbad, CA 92008

Hours: Monday–Thursday: 7:30 am–2:30 pm; Friday–Sunday: 7:30 am–3:30 pm

7. Don’s Country Kitchen

Don’s Country Kitchen, serving old school breakfast in Carlsbad Village

Don’s Country Kitchen, serving top-notch old-school breakfast in Carlsbad Village

This is another of the quintessentially old-school Carlsbad breakfast restaurants, and this one is right in Carlsbad Village. With its ode-to-Americana interior and heartfelt hospitality, both the restaurant and its menu would be right at home in my husband’s charming hometown of Berlin, Maryland.

Don’s definitely has the obligatory Pork Chops with Eggs, Biscuits & Gravy, and Kielbasa menu items, but there is a bunch more breakfast going on too. There are more than a dozen omelettes, plenty of pancake, French toast, and waffle choices, and a handful of Mexican-inspired options.

Moreover, there are 5 different types of Benedicts, and that’s not even including the Stuffed Benedict choices. There are also 3 varieties of Stuffed Hash Browns, which sandwich different goodies between two layers of expertly griddled julienned potatoes.

Don’s is kid-friendly and dog-friendly, so don’t hesitate to bring the whole family in for stick-to-the-ribs breakfast delights in a wholesome environment. Lunch is also available at breakfast time—and vice versa.

Address: 2885 Roosevelt Street, Carlsbad, CA 92008

Hours: Tuesday–Sunday: 8:00 am–1:00 pm

8. broken Yolk Cafe

Monte Cristo, a breakfast specialty at the Broken Yolk

Monte Cristo, a breakfast specialty at the Broken Yolk

Broken Yolk is at home in many San Diego communities, and this particular location provides a reliably tasty breakfast if you find yourself in the La Costa corner of Carlsbad.

The menu really runs the gamut. Healthy options include everything from low-cal wraps and avocado toasts to Spicy Vegan and Acai bowls. Classic dishes include a host of “Two Eggs &” options, and such throwback dishes as their own version of biscuits and gravy and even a Monte Cristo French Toast Sandwich, a creative twist on France’s famous Croque Monsieur.

In addition, you’ll find tons of omelettes, plenty of Benedicts, and mucho South-of-the-Border platas. The generous number of griddle favorites not only includes pancakes, waffles, and French toasts, but French crepes as well. I’m tempted to tell them that crepes are actually not eaten for breakfast in France.

While perhaps not pushing the envelope, the Broken Yolk pulls you in with dependable dishes, friendly service, and reasonable prices.

Address: 7670 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA 92009

Hours: Monday–Friday: 7:00 am–2:00 pm; Saturday & Sunday: 7:00 am–3:00 pm

9. richard Walker’s Pancake House

I’ve been known to get my breakfast to go and reheat it for dinner.

I’ve been known to get my breakfast to go and reheat it for dinner.

The Walker family name has been associated with quality dining since 1948, when the Walkers first opened snack shops in Evanston, Illinois. Subsequent generations expanded operations in the Midwest and then extended their reach to San Diego in 2006. In 2019, Richard Walker’s Pancake House in the Bressi Ranch neighborhood of Carlsbad opened its doors.

I’ve always been impressed by how skillfully prepared and deliciously made any item my husband or I have ever ordered at Richard Walker’s has been. And the portions are so generous that neither Mike nor I can ever finish our whole meal at the restaurant—which means lovely leftovers to look forward to at home the next morning.

As you may have guessed, there are plenty of pancakes on the menu—well over a dozen different styles, and that’s not even counting the Swedish or Potato Pancakes. There are also 8 versions of Belgian waffles and 7 kinds of crepes. If you can’t get excited over this bounty of choices, try one of the baked omelettes, Mexican favorites, or other egg-centric options. Choose with confidence, leave contented.

Address: 2656 Gateway Road, Carlsbad, CA 92009

Hours: Open Daily, 6:30 am–2:30 pm

10. Swami’s CAfe

The Waffle Benedict at Swami’s

The Waffle Benedict at Swami’s

The first Swami’s opened in Encinitas back in 1998 and took its name from the location’s proximity to Swami’s Beach. Carlsbad’s Swami’s Cafe is right on Carlsbad Boulevard in the Village, just a couple blocks from Carlsbad City Beach.

The Carlsbad location is one of 11 Swami’s Cafes in San Diego that are all family owned and dedicated to providing healthy meals made from locally sourced fresh ingredients. In addition to the usual varieties of breakfast meats, offerings also include many vegetarian items, with egg-white-only, organic egg, mock bacon, mock turkey, and gluten-free options all available.

Luckily, healthy here does not mean boring. The menu is extensive, with plenty of interesting omelettes, burritos, sandwiches, multigrain and buttermilk pancakes, and Belgian and multigrain waffles—even specials like salmon and lobster benedicts.

It’s convenient location, ample outdoor seating, and healthy-yet-tasty cuisine has secured Carlsbad’s Swami’s Cafe a loyal local following.

Address: 2780 Carlsbad Boulevard, Carlsbad, CA 92024

Hours: Open Daily, 7:00 am–3:00 pm

11. señor Grubby’s

Señor Grubby’s, one of the best breakfast Carlsbad offers for salsa lovers

Señor Grubby’s, one of the best breakfasts Carlsbad offers for salsa lovers

I have to admit that Señor Grubby’s name and somewhat scruffy facade didn’t entice me to run in and sit down the first few times I passed by it. However, I’ve often found very satisfying meals in rather uninviting places, so it wasn’t long before I gave it a go.

I was pleasantly surprised. There’s far more to the restaurant than the tiny front room that you can sneak a peek at from the entrance. There’s more restaurant as you skirt by the kitchen, and then an outdoor back bar and deck and tons more open-air seating beyond that.

The breakfasts here include a collection of omelettes, scrambles, and classics that can be ordered American Style or Mexican Style. “American” means an accompaniment of toast with either hash browns or home fries. “Mexican” means a choice of corn, vegan, or flour tortillas; black, pinto, or refried beans; and Mexican rice.

In addition, there are breakfast burritos, other Mexican classics, and even a handful of vegan dishes.

With “Señor” in the restaurant’s name, I routinely lean Mexican here, and I am always impressed by the extensive salsa bar. There are at least 6 salsas of different colors, textures heat, and smokiness. And I love the marinated carrots and the fact that there are not only whole, raw jalapeños but also beautifully roasted ones too.

By the time I lay out all the condiments for my breakfast, I’ve managed to make a Mexican mosaic from a meal for one. I’ve enjoyed the flavorful finds and friendly staff here, and they’ve been a great reminder to never judge a restaurant until you’ve at least finished your first meal there.

Address: 377 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad, CA 90028

Hours: Open Daily, 7:00 am–11:30 am

FAQS ABOUT THE BEST BREAKFAST IN CARLSBAD, CA

The Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad, California

The Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad, California

What is the best beachfront breakfast Carlsbad has on offer?

The closest you’re going to get to a beachfront breakfast in Carlsbad is at Chandler’s Oceanfront Dining. This spot is actually across the street from the beach, but it still has a very nice ocean view. The menu is rather small, but you can get a fresh avocado toast, build your own omelette, or splurge on a decadent lobster hash. It’s not on the list because I’d like to see more options on their breakfast menu.

Why Isn’t Restaurant X, Y, or Z on the list?

All the restaurants on the list are either highly rated or an under-the-radar find that I thought merited attention. I’ve eaten at every restaurant under consideration for the Best Breakfast in Carlsbad List—and at some many times—so whether it was highly rated or not, if I wasn’t impressed during my visits, it didn’t make the list.

The most prominently visible breakfast place not on the list is Daily News Cafe in Carlsbad Village. I’ve just never had anything there that was better than average, and I think there are much better choices.

If you have a “best breakfast near me” or favorite breakfast spot in Carlsbad that didn’t make the list, I’d love to hear about it and what you love about it.

Is there live music at any of the best breakfast restaurnants in Carlsbad?

The best I can offer is the brunch option at Canyons at The Crossings, which has brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays, but live music only during the Sunday brunch. They didn’t make the list because they only have breakfast on Thursdays and Fridays, and it’s a limited menu.

For those visiting Carlsbad, is there a good way to find out more about the food scene?

I find happy hours a great low-risk, high-fun way to check out places to eat, so here’s a link to the article I mentioned earlier about Carlsbad happy hour favorites. In addition, there is a great Carlsbad Food Tour & Wine Tasting that visits 5 foodie favorites and San Diego’s oldest urban winery and provides you with delicious samples at each stop.

And whether you’re a local or visitor to Carlsbad, I hope this article helps you pick the best Carlsbad breakfast for any day that you’re in town! Moreover, as a full-time foodie, I want every meal to compete for the title of best meal of the day, so make sure you make the most of your breakfast choices. Bon appétit!
